Bali Culture

Bali culture is one of the key attractions of this beautiful island. The culture is totally unique and permeates through every aspect of life. The influence of Hinduism the main religion is evident in the music, drama, art, costumes and festivals which take place daily.

When visiting the island you will come across a festival almost every day, celebrating the cycle of birth, death and rebirth. Anthropologists believe that the Balinese are descended from the ancient Chinese, the Indians and Arabs from the west, and others who came to the island directly or via Java.

Hinduism is by far the main religions in Bali. The Bali culture is based on a form of this religion, which is called “Hindu Darma”. This religion reached the island during the eleventh century. Most of the family customs and traditions as well as community lifestyles of the Balinese people are influenced by this. The religious influence even expands widely into the arts and fabric of everyday Balinese life, which makes Bali distinct from the rest of Indonesia.

The culture of Bali is unique. It is very evident from travelling through Bali to see for yourself that the Balinese people have reached self-content. It is not an exaggeration when you hear that when a Balinese is asked what heaven is like, he would say, just like Bali, without the worries of mundane life. They want to live in Bali, to be cremated in Bali when they die, and to reincarnate in Bali.

Another remarkable aspect of the Bali culture is the series of ceremonies and rituals known as the Manusa Yadnya. This marks the different stages of Balinese life. Cremation is very popular on this island – and unlike in the West, death is a joyous and colourful event for the Balinese.

The cultural beliefs of the people do not mean that the Balinese resist changes. Instead, they adapt them to their own system and way of life. This acceptance can be traced back far in history. Prior to the arrival of Hinduism in Bali and in other parts of Indonesia, people practiced animism. When Hinduism arrived, the practice of Hinduism was adapted to local practices. The brand of Hinduism practiced in Bali is much different from that in India. Other aspects of life flow this way.
